Wanderlust & Warm Springs

Co-led Tour series with a member of the Confederated Tribes of warm springs

Why Co-led tours

Since our founding in 1993, the mission of Wanderlust Tours has been to inspire our guests and vibrantly share the natural and cultural history of Oregon in order to instill appreciation and protection of the environment. Simply put, we cannot fully tell the history of Central Oregon’s without the perspectives and stories of this lands original stewards, the Warm Springs, Wascoes, and Paiutes. Their history and spiritual connection to the land that we are fortunate enough to guide upon is woven into the bedrock of mountains, rivers, and forests that make up this incredible landscape. We are so excited to partner with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs this summer to put together a series of tours where we will have the opportunity to co-guide with a member of the Warm Springs tribe. With this summer tour series, we hope to bring greater awareness and understanding to the Native history of Central Oregon, learning about… (Connection to Deschutes, native history, dark sky, etc etc).

She was raised to live and carry out their traditional and cultural ways, still living by those ways today. Starla is a traditional food gatherer and protector of her traditional way of life and their Indigenous foods.

Starla retired from a career in law enforcement, but continues to work in the tourism industry and economic development. She is a graduate of Western Oregon University and has one daughter who is on track to graduate and ready to pursue her college career.

We are very fortunate to be able to work with Starla for the co-led tour series.

Warm Springs Community Action Team

The Warm Springs Community Action Team (WSCAT) is a non-profit community development organization located on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. WSCAT was first established in 2001 as an incubated program under the Central Oregon Partnership. WSCAT envisions a Warm Springs Reservation in which tribal and community members control their own destinies, in which people are in a position to provide for their families, pursue their hopes and dreams, and achieve their full potential. WSCAT became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in August 2008. WSCAT is located in the Warm Springs Agency, the largest community on the Warm Springs Reservation.

WSCAT’s mission is to promote community development in Warm Springs by empowering individuals and groups of people to realize their potential, become self-reliant, and affect positive change for themselves, their families, and their community.

The peaks of cascade mountains are still snow-laden while lower in elevation, the flowers have bloomed, animals are scurrying about, and summer is in full effect. As we paddle through this stunning waterway, we will learn about native use of this mighty river, with your guides imparting an understanding of river’s (fishing, resources, travel, wild game, hunting, etc. - whatever they would like to focus on / can focus on river specifically, region as whole, or both). Your group will be energized and inspired by the incredible history of this beautiful river that runs through the heart of Bend.

Deschutes River: The paddle is a flatwater (NO rapids) stretch of the Deschutes River in which we will start our paddling up river a ways, before flipping around and enjoying a with-river float back down!
